The idea of Bespoken Word came to me in 2022 while I was thinking about the future of publishing and professional editing services. If you’re curious why it took me until 2026 to finally launch it, you can read that story here.
I’ve always been a big lover of the senses that came alive while reading; touch (holding a book), smell (books old and new have distinct smells), obviously sight (reading). I had also fallen in love with the reading app on my phone.
Like many, I’m a reformed physical book snob, some of my favourite books I’ve read digitally.
The comfort I found from being able to sit/lie in any position and read comfortably was beyond joyful.
And I thought to myself, how many more authors and books would readers be able to enjoy if it wasn’t necessary to be published in physical form and without the need for traditional publishers. So with this thought, I told my family the idea to offer freelance editorial services, right here in Melbourne.
My dad’s first thought was, “You need a good business name”. So we all thought on it, I couldn’t come up with anything halfway decent that hadn’t already been done, and I didn’t want to use my name.
Then my dad just announces ‘Bespoken Word’, and I just knew that was the name.
Why?
Because each word is bespoke to the person who wrote it, and the only person who should have final influence over their words is the author.
All I want to do is help authors shape their words into what they intend them to be, to create the best story that affects the readers in any way they choose.
So who am I?
