2022? But It’s 2026…
If you read our first article, you may’ve noticed that I came up with Bespoken Word, my Melbourne freelance editing and proofreading business, in 2022…
…and it’s now 2026…
So what happened?
Life.
I know. I know. It’s a lame excuse.
I’d love to say that life after COVID just got a bit more exciting.
And it did, I bought a house and all the fun and entertaining that comes along with that distracted me for a while.
…but not for more than three years.
Work picked up, and I think I got so busy with professional book editing that work that my idea just fell to the wayside. Then I started travelling more, now that the world was open once again, that I couldn’t give it my all like authors deserve after putting in years of effort into their story, which wasn’t fair.
Fast-forward to 2026 and what changed?
Well, on average, I read 100-150 books a year, and as an Australian book editor, I can’t help noticing when a great story is let down by its editing. I also really love editing more than anything else, so why not jump into the freelance world?
I had been an in-house editor in Melbourne for 7-plus years and wanted to take my skills ‘on the road’, for lack of a better phrase (maybe a writer can help me come up with a better one).
I want to look back at my life one day and be proud and satisfied with the work I’ve done and I want to get to that point doing the work I love rather than having “what if?” thoughts and regrets.
And, like myself, I am sure there are many aspiring authors and already published authors that feel the same way. Whether that’s fear of failure (I know all about that, see above), fear that your writing isn’t up to par, or fear that your words won’t be your own in the end, I understand all those worries.
But I’m here to be your support and hold your hand through the whole editing process if that’s what you need.
I don’t want to change your story or influence your words, I just want to polish them up to be the story you want to put out in the world, because I believe everyone can achieve whatever they set their mind to, sometimes we just need an extra helping hand.
